EARTHQUAKE NEWS

It's been a while since the last news letter with busy times in Christchurch, and then the tragedy of a massive earthquake where remarkably no one was killed - that is somethng that makes us very fortunate. With the Eastern suburbs being hit hard all of us in Christchurch know at least one family who has had their home badly damaged. I know of three families who have lost their homes. For Customlight our premises remained undamaged with only a few shelves falling over - so it's business as usual for us - and the local economy is begining to stir with plans for the massive rebuild already taking shape. The biggest thing for Christchurch at the moment is to keep everyone busy and support those who need a helping hand. For Customlight we need to see your orders and enquiries coming in - so please get in touch.

Architectural Marvel....

A Calla lily-shaped research centre for Wuhan University is set to bloom in China. Netherlands-based firm Grontmij recently won the award to design and construct the building which will be zero carbon and zero energy and include a slew of other green building strategies. Located in Wuhan, the New Energy Center was designed to resemble a lily, with a 140 meter tower in the centre surrounded by lower towers in the shape of flowers and covered in vegetation. The centre tower expands upwards into a bowl and is coated in a large solar array facing the sun, soaking up rays just like a real plant. A vertical axis wind turbine shoots up out of the middle of the tower like a pistil. Rainwater is collected in the bowl and a 120 metre solar chimney in the tower helps expel hot air from the building while pulling in cooler air below. Construction is to begin in November of 2010.

Mother Nature Having a Bad Day......

A tropical storm battered Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador during June 2010. Guatemala was hit hardest, with at least 92 deaths, 54 people missing and 59 injured, 112,000 were evacuated and more than 29,000 were forced into temporary shelters. The devastation was widespread throughout Guatemala with mudslides destroying homes and buildings and burying some victims. At least nine rivers had dramatically higher levels and 13 bridges collapsed. The office of Guatemala's President handed out this aerial view of a crater that opened up after Agatha hit. In the northern part of Guatemala City, the downpour created a giant sinkhole that swallowed up a space larger than the area of a street intersection. Residents told reporters that a three-story building and a house fell into the hole. This makes you realise just how powerful mother nature is and how lucky we are in Christchurch to have come through this earthquake with so few personal injuries.

Illuminated Signs still as Popular as ever...

We still make surprising quanities of these solid interior illuminated signage products. With safety in mind the Exit Signs are regularly requested for building revamps as well as new buildings. The In Use sign is another example which some people quite like to use in their homes for that quirky toliet feature - I kid you not !
This example looks great in stainless steel, however we can powder coat these items to any colour of your choice.
