Long Road to Recovery for Worldwide Construction, and a worrying time for Cats!

The decline in construction activity this year was broader, steeper and faster than many economists anticipated. The private non-residential building markets succumbed to the credit crunch and many public markets waited for stimulus funding to be delivered - which never arrived. This year’s batch of forecasts for construction in 2010 say the worst is over, although this seems unlikely. Most gains will be the result of percentage comparisons with the dismal 2009 numbers, while the real market will be unable to sustain much forward momentum. Wall Street analyst sometimes call this activity a “dead-cat bounce".

Crayfish Pots a Hit !

At Customlight Engineering we are not shy at trying new things. After some research on the regulations we produced some compliant crayfish pots from steel, with a galvanised finish.
The response has been great as we have seen large numbers go out the door. Two sizes which are 610 x 510 x 310 and and larger size of 910 x 610 x 300. It seems craypots of this quality are not readily available. The photo above was taken out of our workshp window - it seems they're on to us..........

Engineering Trivia
Bank Building Constructed by Mail !

In 1916, W.H. Coltharp began construction of a new building which would house the Bank of Vernal and a general store. He planned the most modern building between Salt Lake City and Denver, and wanted to use textured brick, the nearest source being Salt Lake City. The cost of hauling the 80 thousand bricks to Vernal by wagon freight was four times as much as the bricks were worth. He finally hit upon the idea of sending the bricks by parcel post, where the freight rates were considerably lower. To accomplish this, it was necessary to wrap the bricks individually and package them in 50 pound parcels; which was done. The mail route was over a tortuous 427 miles from Salt Lake to Mack, Colorado by D & R G Railroad, then to Watson on the narrow gauge Uintah Railway, and finally the last 65 miles to Vernal by wagon freight. As a result of this shipment, the US Postal Regulations were revised which limits the number of pounds that can be sent to one consignee in one day.

Dead Cat Bounce ???

A small and temporary recovery in a financial market following a large fall. When a financial market suffers a consistent fall traders attempt to detect when prices are at their lowest and then buy stocks hoping for a bargain. If they buy too soon prices may rise temporarily but then decline again. This is called the dead cat bounce. The idea being that even a dead cat will bounce if you drop it from a great height. The phrase seems to have struck a chord and other 'bounce' phrases have emerged, notably 'Baghdad bounce'. This is the rise in popularity that both George Bush and Tony Blair enjoyed following the fall of Baghdad in the Iraqi War. That popularity waned somewhat later when it became clear that pulling allied troops out of Iraq was likely to take longer than the public had first anticipated.
