Engineering News

An engineer in Hampshire has broken the world land speed record for a vehicle powered by wind – by 10mph. The engineer, Richard Jenkins, drove the Ecotricity Greenbird car at 126.1mph across a dry lake bed in Nevada, USA, on 27 March, 2009.
Now the fastest naturally-powered person on Earth, Jenkins describes his vehicle as part aeroplane, part sailboat and part Formula 1 car. A vertical sail sits upon its light shell roof and thrusts forward from the airflow that travels across it. Dale Vince, of the firm Ecotricity, told The Sun: “It shows what is achievable with great British engineering and the power of the wind. In the next 20 years wind-powered cars will no longer be the stuff of dreams.”

Vandalism still plagues Christchurch City !

How do we combat random acts of destruction... ?

Once again we visit this serious topic which creates havoc for many. Vandalism is caused by people who think it is funny to damage peoples property - Normally caused by peer pressure when asked to vandalise people feel they cant say no. Vandalism can also be committed against minority groups as an expression of racism or religious hatred. It has been found in studies of teenage behaviour that those who commit seemingly pointless acts of vandalism are often shallow individuals who aspire to little other than material possessions, money and glamour, and feel jealous of those who have what they don't. It can be the result of bad parenting, but I suppose some are just born that way. Graffiti vandalism is a little different, in that they consider themselves "artists" who strive to be respected by other graffiti "artists". Cutting through fences, slipping past security to claim walls to tag is a big part of the thrill. Have a look at some recent vandal proof products pictured - plug cover box above designed to prevent plugs and leads from being stolen and tampered with, flood light cover boxes below to prevent pointless destruction of floodlights from reoccurring.

Engineering Trivia

The word bicycle is from the Latin, bis, twice and the Greek, kyclos, circle. This fashionable mode of transport was denounced by a Baltimore preacher in 1896 as a "diabolical device of the demon of darkness". His reason for condemnation was not on the perfectly justifiable grounds that the word is an ugly Latin-Greek hybrid (etymological purists would only ride a dicycle) but simply because too many of his parishioners were lured away from church on pleasant Sunday afternoons by the temptation of a bike ride. Perhaps because they are aware of the potential corrupting danger to moral standards, British Columbia has imposed a 10 mph limit for tricycles.
